Having come on one of your courses earlier in the year, we have been very pleased with the results of the no-dig approach – the extra time means a much tidier allotment!

My question is regarding the harvesting of carrots. Some of the latest main crop I have pulled recently have very fine roots growing along the body of the carrot – more like hair really.

Does this mean they should be lifted and stored?

    Many thanks

     Hello Keith, Alsison,

Nice to hear that you are having a good season and enjoying no dig. As for the fine hairs on carrot roots, they appear at odd moments, possibly to do with finding more moisture after watering or rain, although not always. But they are not an indication of maturity and if you tried to store them from now, they would not keep well in the warmth. October is the earliest time for harvesting to store. Also by then the roots change character as leaves slow down and goodness accumulates more in the roots.

I have noticed that root flavours are superb at the moment from drier soil than last year, more flavours concentrating.
