Hi I have an allotment and have been following no dig principles for 6 years. The soil in my raised beds was – very rich, weed free – in fact everything I could have wished for using no-dig. For the past 9 months I’ve been extending my allotment and preparing the new ground ready to get started this year. For the past 9 months, my 2 terrier dogs have been using the old allotment beds as a playground (not a toilet!). As a result, the soil in my beds is extremely compacted.
What do I do next? I have a lot of home made compost. Shall I just spread it on top, or perhaps lift the existing soil a bit and then put the compost on top? I’m inclined just to spread the compost on top of the compacted soil – but it really is compacted. What do you think folks?

Hard to be sure but terriers are small dogs. Your bed ‘soil’ is probably half compost and firm rather than compact. Best check with a trowel, which should enter relatively easily in moist conditions..
