Hot bed was rather successful, thou hard work to collect manure, four full small trailers worth. It was fresh stable horse manure, wood shavings rather than hay/straw, it was prepared Jan/Feb time, added leaves/straw/fresh pure horse manure (never again, so many flies!) in March/April. It got to a sufficient temperature (60c) for its purpose of raising seedlings.
I have now dismantled top and front, removed the material that has not decomposed, and I am now left with what is vaguely compost, do you think it is ready? It can remain in polytunnel till Jan when new hot bed is prepared.
The wood shavings do take a long time to break down, but do so most quickly when on the surface, it is better spread than left in a heap.
So yes you can use this as compost mulch, but not where you will want to sow small seeds in the spring.
