Hi Charles,
I am in the process of setting up my first no dig plot and purchased a large delivery of mushroom compost in bags which arrived today.
My concern is that the bags are still quite warm to the touch. I took the temperature of a single bag and it was showing 26 degrees celsius in the centre. Having given it a bit more thought I then took the temperature of one of the bags that was in the middle of the stack and this read 36 degrees.
I was planning to use this as the main compost in my newly set up greenhouse beds… in your opinion do you think it will be ok to use yet or should I leave it to rot down a while longer?

Hello Zoe, it’s a good question.
36C is not too hot but in a larger heap that might be 50C.
Yes the compost is still decomposing, I recommend to buy it 2 or more months before using as this often happens with mushroom & green waste compost.
Nonetheless you can use it, only growth will likely be slower. If you have some proper decomposed compost as the top 2in/5cm that will help winter plants.
