Over the last fews years I have gathered all the fallen leaves together into a wire fenced construction about 2 metres by 2 metres, and they make a huge pile that slowly decreases over the year. By next autumn I want to use the ‘construction again, so spread the reasonable leaf mould on the garden and start again. That which I put into old garden bags and leave a further year looks better. I have spread one year leaf mould on the no dig patch, but am now concerned that perhaps they were not decomposed sufficiently and so might encourage slugs.
Would you advise instead of adding those leaves to my general compost bins along with the green waste that goes in? Would it speed up the decomposing of the leaves? I thought that compost used bacteria to decompose, and leaves fungus – and that it was best to keep the two seperate. Your thoughts would be really welcome.

Yes the undecomposed leaves may harbour slugs and yes, I would add them to your main compost where they are good ‘brown’ to balance the green, and useful in summer when green predominates.
Leaves can be decomposed by bacteria, I guess the compost quality is different but they will turn to compost, rather than mould!
