After agreeing to help my husband with veg growing this year in our garden, I came across the no dig method of growing veg. He’s been breaking his back for years with very little return. However, our garden is a mess. 1. Slugs and Snails are running riot, I think its partly because half the garden almost becomes a swimming pool when we have heavy rain. 2. We have a willow tree that overhangs our garden from the adjoining school playing field so the spot at the bottom of the garden is in constant shade, nothing grows there except ivy and a struggling pear tree which somehow still produces lovely pears. And what do you do with the leaves from a 30ft willow tree? Can they be composted? Lastly, Any recommendations on how one eradicates Spanish Bluebells. We have dug the bulbs out of the boarders so many times but yet they come back worse than ever. This month its like a plague! In short will no dig have a hope of working in our garden?
Alexis, I wonder what other difficulties you could add to the question!
The willow bothers me most, as tree roots are so invasive and mulching does not help. I would not attempt vegetables close to it.
The bluebells want mulching from January, since they spring to life so early.
SLugs, there is a lot of advice here. Year one, I would not attempt carrots… and best of luck, do a couple of small beds to see.
