How thickly should cardboard be laid over an area of perennial weeds? With compost/manure, is a single layer of double wall cardboard (1st pic) enough or would triple wall cardboard (2nd pic) be better? Does it only work with a double layer of double wall cardboard?
When I laid my cardboard, which was scrap cartons previously holding household appliances, either/both were used.A single layer: just open out flat and lay. Its a barrier to sunlight, not weeds!.Therefore necessary to overlap 4″ on all edges. Best to remove cellotape and watch out for those vicious coppered staples-they bite.I found it best to mow off all vegetation to ground level and left the mower box off.Use the compost to hold down edges and fill the middle areas. I found it best not to wheel across uncovered cardboard with the barrow, rather to ‘side tip’from the bare edge.
Where paths are to be, add woodchip waste rather than compost/manure but cover all the surface. It doesn’t matter if the ground is not level but do remove any visible brickends, stones and other debris.If you get weeds emerging, rake back the compost and ‘patch ‘ with more cardboard. You probably will get a 95% kill if lucky/thorough.Good luck
