My partner and I came on one of your day courses in August. We have now got our ground to start growing and are hoping to get the mulch down as soon as possible so as to get it ready for spring growing. For an area or 28x13m (364m2), how much manure do we need to order? 30cm depth gives us about 100m3 I think, but no idea how that translates into tonnes! It is for on top of grass and some nettles and docks, but nothing that looks too persistent. We aren’t planning on covering it as it is a pretty big area, and are hoping that what is delivered is sufficiently well rotted to plant some things straight into.
Interesting question! In fact, 30cm depth is way more than you need for a large area, even beds to plant straight into need no more than 12-15cm – and generally if you have grass (suggesting reasonable fertility underneath), 5-7cm of manure will be plenty, with some cardboard/plastic on top. There is no precise answer, it depends what you plan. To cover the whole plot with 5cm would require about five tonnes I think, but it depends how dense and wet the manure is. Order more than you think to need as a big pile is used so quickly. And keep us posted!
I used to work in quarries and a good rule of thumb is that most soil/manure/sand etc if not soaking is very roughly 1 tonne to 1 cubic meter.
