how quickly you can turn nice looking beds to mush

I love having my eight year old godson over to help on the allotment, but he today demonstrated how well the undug system helps keep the soil looking good. He was helping to dig his favourite parsnips and very quickly turned the soil to a sticky morass and there was I thinking that we really hadnt done so badly from all of the rain. I now understand why most allotment holders dont go on their plots all winter, although our soil is a light loam as soon as we started putting the spade in it changed SO dramatically it was almost unbelievable, what had been looking like happy well drained beds turned to gloop.

Still it was worth it to see his face digging up his very own vegetables.

Went back up the allotment this morning in wonderful sunshine, walked all over and everywhere still looking well drained except where parsnips were dug yesterday, which is still full of puddles and to my mind the soil structure looks different.

 Well that is interesting Bluebell and i hope your parsnip bed can recover quickly, under a nice compost mulch. Walking on wet soil is usually ok but as you noticed, once the structure is broken, trouble ensues.
