How to tell when ripe?

I have always grown peppers that change colour when ripe but this year I’m growing ‘ hungarian black’ which is created dark black. So how do I tell when it is ripe?

They turn red. Admittedly a dark red, but they do change colour. And they taste wonderful when ripe, albeit very mild. They are also edible when green, or black outside in this case, and you get a bigger harvest if picking green, but make sure they are full size. Personally I prefer them red.
