intercropping

Hello all,

Here’s the problem – I have four beds, all now with established veg. I have no onion bed as I haven’t had time to develop more space ( new house!) I put leeks in a bucket and a few are now  ready to go into the soil.

Any suggestion on where they can go? I have been reading some  books on companion planting and have formed no opinion yet. I have a brassica bed and some old ( world war two era) books suggest intercropping with leeks may be helpful amongst brassicas.

In short, does intercropping work?

Any suggestions, wild folk wisdom, or common sense would be appreciated.

Like everything really, it works when done well. Timing and shade are key points so leeks between brassicas sounds tricky as brassicas are so light demanding. Between carrots or beetroot is more possible, but it depends on soil moisture and goodness too.
