Hi Charles, I’m planning things for next season and, due to success with Santero onion this year, I wish to grow them in quantity next year. I’d like to get some small plants growing amongst them towards harvest time – July/August and wondered a) is this advisable, and b) if possible what are the most likely candidates?
I was considering beetroot and perhaps winter/ spring brassicas?
I found that kale worked well this year, sown June & planted July.
You need to look at onion growth in June and if they are still full of leaf, wait a bit before sowing the next crop in modules, aim to plant out as onions are just starting to die back, may be mid July.
Also possible are beetroot and many salads.
Many thanks for a detailed response, very helpful. It’ll be a fairly large space so I would like to make the most of it. I have a bed for salads at the house which provides huge amounts of leaf (9′ x 4′) so I’ll go with the beetroot and kale I think! Hope it helps out others too.
