I planted Sturon Onion sets out on 19th March and most of the tops have fallen over but it seems early to harvest. In previous years I have harvested in August. Is it too early to harvest?
Another question – A lot of the onion stalks seem very thick where they join the bulb, why is this?
I have tried growing onions from seeds but I end up with onions no bigger than the onion sets I plant. Do you have to lift them and replant in the spring? ie Do they take 2 years to grow from seed.

Good to harvest now and bend the thick stalks down so the necks dry better.
My onions from seed look as big as these but less mature, harvest in a month, not sure what you are doing wrong. Sow March undercover, plant APril, harvest early August
