My neighbour has chopped down and shredded a whole load of laurel. Is it safe to use as a mulch on paths or beds after it has rotted down? He seemed to think it was poisonous (which I think it is to cattle), but is it harmful to other growing plants and vegetables? Any info gratefully received. Bogbean
The oil on laurel leaves means they rot slowly and may not look pretty for a while but I know of no reason not to use them; and the soil under laurel hedges, where they have fallen, is fine to grow in. Like privet, whose leaves poison goats (happened to me) but are fine for soil.
