Leeks – planting in groups

Hi,

I was at your open day on Sunday – great to see the garden looking so good, hope it was a success and your raised quite a bit for your cow!

I noticed you planted leeks in groups of three, I was going to ask you in person but you were pretty busy, do you transplant these as seedlings? What size are they when you do this, how deep are they planted and is enough of the stem in the ground to give a decent “white” shaft?

 Hi Dave, glad you enjoyed the day, yes they are planted small (like onion transplants) in May from an indoor sowing but are not deep enough to have a white shank. Just at soil level. However the stems are long and plae green, tender and tasty, perhaps a little less sweet for not being blanched.

thanks I will give it a go and compare against single transplantation. I now grow onions and beet in clumps and that works really well and very efficient space utilisation.
