Missed the boat…

….on Kelsae onion seed this year 🙁 seems the last couple of seasons have seen poor harvests of seed and therefore less available.

I thought I’d give mammoth red onion from robinsons a try; has reportedly good storing capabilities which is one up on the Kelsae if true. Anyone grown this variety in the past? Any observations or growing tips e.g. Spacings and sowing time etc.?

Composts; what were growers results on west ridings versus klasmann versus ??? West ridings was a success for myself last season but I’m tempted by the klasmann too…..decisions, decisions.

Trus I would grow those red onions at your normal spacings, otherwise they may be awkwardly large…
My Klaasmann grew slightly stronger plants than the W Riding, so if you can buy it more cheaply, it’s worth considering. Both are very good.

Thanks Charles. Good tip on th onions as football sized ones would be a challenge to get through even in a week!

I’m gonna give the klasmann a run this year then, plus finishing off a bag of the WR too.

P.s. Clarity on spacing as I have only grown multi sown clumps so far at distances of 12″ planting on the square. Kings recommend a spacing of 18″ to grow large mammoth onions as single plants – I guess a spacing of 10″ should help keep them in check, also on the square?

Rhys, how did you find the klasmann versus WR, I have a memory of you trying both?

Yes 18in per onion is a massive distance apart. If soil is fertile and you want onions of say orange-size, I would plant at 6-8in on the square.
