i am slightly concerned about where i have put thick layers of mulch around new fruit trees and bushes – because this has raised the surrounding ground level so much that the trees are now effectively in a hole, or at least a significant depression. and on our site we really need drainage and airflow around the stems as it is always raining!
when we planted the trees we set them at the correct level in the soil. however the soil level could be several inches below the level of the tussocky grass surrounding the new tree. then on top of that tussocky grass we put cardboard, manure, and bundles of rushes that we had cut. so the level of the mulch is at least 8″s above the level of the soil.
do you think this could make things too wet and mouldy?
Possibly but I have found, after having similar worries, that all was well in the end because of how organic mtter densifies to a much thinner layer over time, and is taken in by worms. Trees I planted seven years ago, quite deep at the time, are now well clear of the soil with large roots visible. It is good that you have made a hole around the trunks though. Perhaps you will have a spring drought to ease you these concerns….
