Hi last year I dug out one side of my greenhouse, and filled it with compost and manure to grow tomato’s,aubergines, and courgettes.
I’m considering taking the no dig approach to the other side this year, but need some guidance. I have the vegetable garden diary book, but I need guidance on how to plant my seedlings.
I plan to mulch the the undug side with manure, and compost, but I’m not really sure how to go about planting the seedlings as they need to be deeper than the level of compost and manure.
Can I dig down into the undisturbed soil to create a planting hole the required depth or is this a no-no.
Generally how do you go about planting seedlings/plants into a no dig bed, when the depth required is more than the level of mulch?
Max you seem to be assuming that your plants have to go into soil.
Actually they are fine, when planted into surface compost.
No need to worry about what is where, just plant them as normal, depth wise.
Worms and soil life will sort the bed’s ingredients for you.
Hi,
So if my mulch layer is 4 inches but I need to plant my tomato say 6 inches, I’m ok to dig a planting hole another 2 inches deeper or should the layer of mulch be 6 inches deep?
Apologies not explaining myself very well.
Kind Regards
Max
Yes for sure, no dig is not a rule, sometimes one needs to make a planting hole into the soil, in fact quite often for large potted plants.
I had not understood your concern when first answering.
Mulched the left side if my green house with manure, and compost watered it. I think I will leave it for a week before planting as it snowed today in Yorkshire.
Will move on to my potatoes next, do you have any advice on earthing up the potatoes, or do you just keep mulching as the potatoes grow.
