New book called 'Getting Started with Growing Fruit'…..

This book is written by Gerry Edwards, professional orchardist, in partnership with the National Vegetable Society, with whom he is a national fruit judge.

I came across it at yesterday’s Hillingdon Borough Autumn Show, where Gerry was judging in his home borough.

It’s price is £4 and obviously, I’ve not got details of where it can be purchased, since Gerry was selling them in person on the day! I’m sure a quick online search will find it.

I’ve not read it extensively yet, but what struck my mind immediately was the sections documenting how you can, with judicious choice of apple strains, be harvesting apples from July to Christmas. The insight that the flavour of Cox Orange Pippin is transformed by delaying harvest well into October was also highly useful for me, as we have one in the garden with a magnificent potential harvest currently.

It seems like a valuable read for most amateur fruit growers and, at the price marketed, seems a bit of a no-brainer to buy too. No doubt the NVS will arrange for various detailed reviews to be published as they launch their marketing campaign to sell it…….

Lest you wonder, he is also an organic grower, so he uses no herbicides, non-organic fertilisers etc etc.
