New plot about 45 x 60 meters

I have a new plot, on this plot pony,s have walked around for years, only the last 2 years nothing happened there, it is full of gras and weeds etc.
10 very old fruittrees are also in this plot which need pruning etc, but that will come.

I need some advice about preparing this plot to turn it into a vegetalble garden.
The soils is quite hard, i am wondering if i should till the soil, or can this be productive with just compost and mulch?

What a great project! I have a similar plot, though mine is the aftermath of removing a barn. I have very heavy yellow clay, and I am looking forward to testing Charles’ inspirational methods! I have started small with a raised bed full of compost, now planted up, and am going to make another one for raspberries.

But don’t waste your effort digging – you will spoil the natural soul structure.
