Onions

hello people,

Just before I found this no dig method, I decided to cover my veg plot with light excluding membrane, to try and cut down on bindweed and horse tail. I made holes and planted onions, which are doing well. Some of them have popped through the membrane, but most are still under it. I am wondering if they will mature properly without sunlight. Does anyone know?

Hi,

I’m a little confused by what your saying. Did you cut holes in the membrane to plant the Onions through?
If you covered them with the membrane then they will not grow.
Also most people are harvesting their Onions now that were sown last autumn or this spring not planting. Its also too early for autumn sowing.

Hello Herb Woman, I think you mean that many of your onion bulbs are swelling below the membrane, while their leaves are growing in full light above?
That is fine, and I guess its from planting through small holes.
To harvest, you may need to ease the membrane off, maybe in 2-3 weeks when the tops are dying down.
That avoids cutting larger holes, to pull out the bulbs. Membrane makes many threads when cut, it best holed with a blow torch which seals the cut edge.
Then use the same holes next year.
