Hi,
I have just acquired an allotment that has large area of couch, creeping buttercup and other weeds. Ive been given some advice from various people and am a little confused. My plan was to turn over the soil, cover it with about 4 inches of manure and compost and then cover with black polythene. Firstly. . Do I need to turn the soil? Secondly. . Do I need to weed and thirdly. .How long should the polythene be left on for?

There is no need to turn/weed. Although many fellow allotmenteers will tell you to do so. You probably dont even need the polythene. I have just put down a layer of card in my new greenhouse with about 3 inches of well rotted manure. this will significantly weaken the weeds and I just make sure that I go round each week and lift out any weeds that are cheeky enough to put their heads up.
