I have recently managed to track down a small plant of Daubenton kale, which is currently in a pot on my patio. My original plan was to plant this out in March or April next year, but I see from a recent update that you have been planting yours in December, and wonder whether I would instead be better to get mine in the ground as soon as possible? It is about 20cm high with healthy-looking growth at the top, and I am attempting to follow a no-dig approach on heavy (and currently very wet) clay.
Also, assuming it establishes successfully, does it require any particular care/protection (e.g. from pigeons which are a problem here)?
Any advice would be much appreciated, as the books don’t generally seem to cover this vegetable!
Well done on finding a plant. I woud keep it in the pot for a while. I planted mine outside because I have nowhere else to put it for now, my greenhouse arrives on February 11th (big day!). Also the pigeons have not yet noticed Homeacres garden but when they do I am ready with netting, which it needs if they are hungry as it is so tasty.
But the plants are hardy and tolerate heavy soil, with some organic matter on the surface. Let it grow until about June then pick larger leaves and any shoots which snap off or blow off can be popped into a hole in the ground to make new plants.
