    Hi Charles

Firstly thank you very much for earlier advise, and really great information I have used from the web site and your books. We have been enjoying plenty of friut and veg this year, no dig organic works very well for us at a number of levels.

I expect this is easy but it’s our first year and not sure of what they are or how to control. The top of a section of the runner beans is infested with these bugs. We noticed them today, most of the runner bean bushes are not affected so far.

Would you know what they are, and any advise to control? Should I carefully remove the affected top section for example?

    Many thanks

    Best Regards

Al, nice to hear of your progress.
In close-up they look a bit horrid, its black aphids, known as blackfly, which arrive mostly on plants stressed by dry conditions, and in fine weather. They suck sap without killing plants.
I have a few on some climbing French beans but the crop is still good.
You could pinch off affected stems with the worst clusters, or spray them off with water and hose down the row from either side will help. Water is best answer.
