Planting Blueberries

Hi all,

Does it make a difference if you plant them in a seperate corner of a bed in ericasious compost or in containers? Planting in a bed would seem to lessen the need for watering…

I have a collection of 3 different types of blueberry. I “compromised” by creating a small raised bed for them, which I filled with ericaceous compost. In the winter, I mulch with pine needles.

I understand that blueberries are moisture loving plants, so watering seems to be inevitable; I give mine priority for watering and endeavour to keep the soil moist.

Keep them covered as the birds love the berries and they will disappear in the twinkling of an eye!

Thanks Beverley,

I planted them in the corner of our fruit bed yesterday and promptly watered them in with tapwater instead of the rainwater I had specifically collected (I’d blame the enthusiasm of my 5 year old for using the hosepipe for this mistake but to be honest my ageing brain means I make these kind of errors all on my own…)

I’ve learnt from the links above that I should have planted 2
different varieties, so it’s back to the garden centre for me…
