Polytunnel vs.greenhouse

I have a half allotment that I ‘converted ‘ to no-dig last year, and this year have been given a second half. I would like to grow some crops under cover to extend the growing season and provide cover for tomatoes, cucumber peppers etc.i am a reasonably experienced gardener, but have never grown under cover. I see that both Charles and Steph do much of their growing in polytunnels and greenhouse. Which would be more useful ?

I can afford either a very reduced price 8′ by 12′ greenhouse with polycarbonate glazing or a Polytunnel 10 by 15′ or 8 by 20’ .is wider or longer better? Have been advised to go for as big as possible but they sound huge!! How big do you think is needed for small family.

I appreciate the pros and cons of putting them up and lifespan, but I would appreciate any advice or comments on pros and cons for growing from those who have experience of both. The site is open, not particularly exposed, gentle north south slope.

I am no expert but I will share my experience I built my poly tunnel 8 * 20
I have a windy site so used half scaffold pipes driven into the ground then used thick blue water piping for the roof support but this withstands high winds no problems.
I have a central slab path down the middle.
I have doors either end with a mesh cover to allow air circulation and open the door for periods to allow insects in for pollination.

I do not have experience of the greenhouse but I love my poly tunnel.

I plant successfully chillis cucumbers tomatoes winter salads tomatillos.

One mistake I made was installing overhead watering system the watched in horror as blight developed so I now usage ground level watering system.

Finally I spent more on the polythene cover to give good light throughput and uv it has so far lasted very well

So I am in favour of the poly tunnel
