We’ve been having a bit of a south of France summer up here in London and apart from a 2 inch deluge in 2 hrs last weekend, we’ve barely had much proper rain since the first week in June.
As a result, the potatoes have been watered a great deal with tap water, which isn’t exactly the right pH for them.
I was wondering whether, under such conditions, there is a cost-benefit equation in terms of growing tubers bigger vs losing them to scab after a certain number of weeks and whether harvesting maincrop earlier than normal makes any sense during droughts??
I have a row of Picasso and a row of Cara now at 17 weeks, another Picasso at 15 weeks and a Picasso and 12 Desiree plants at 14 weeks.
Any thoughts gratefully received…….
In my opinion life is too short to spend any of it watering potatoes. At least if it is dry there is less chance of blight.
As for harvesting I dig them if I need them only taking the whole lot if I have reason to believe they have stopped growing and I have somewhere to store them.
