    Hello Charles,

We’ve got some first early potatoes that we’re going to try – Madeleines – and we were wondering if you had any tips? This will be our first attempt with potatoes – we saw in your book that March is quite early to sow them, and it’s still occasionally frosty in the mornings where we are.
Also, do you have any advice or tips on ‘chitting’?
    Thanks in advance…

Yes earlies can go in now, 2" deep to be below the frost. Chitting helps early growth but is not vital. They can be ‘earthed up’ with extra compost applied to the row in a ridge or pulled up from the sides to cover early leaves if frost is still happening, until about mid May.

Yes, for earthing up, good old green waste compost is fine and will help the next vegetable too
