Hi Charles/All,
I have just finished harvesting my first crop of Hurst Greenshaft Garden Peas.
The successional crop is now heavy with pods that I expect will be ready for picking in 2-3 weeks time.
However this crop is now showing signs of Powdery Mildew. I’m wondering whats the best thing to do in this situation.Don.
Don this is from later sowing. I never sow peas here after the first week of April, in cooler regions it will be later. May sowings crop later but are prone to mildew which is prevalent after midsummer. Hence no May sowing in my timeline.
Watering should help but once established it may be difficult to stop and the pea flavour is less sweet, from reduced photosynthesis.
I prefer to sow French beans in May, just starting now and delicious..Milk solution helps prevent (or at least hold back) powdery mildew so may be worth trying for your pea crop – Skimmed milk 1:9 with water (or 1:6 even) – must spray in sunshine. Also helps against black spot on roses!
(Can use whole milk but skimmed milk smells less)
