    Hi Charles

Having dug down to break up the layer of what  i thought was concrete on the floor in my polytunnel to prepare it for a new bed I have found that it is a mixture of compacted clay subsoil, drainage stone in places and sand ,should I try to dig it all over to break up the clay or take a layer of it all away or just put 6 inches of compost on the top .

    Kind Regards

    Mark

This sounds difficult but without knowing more its hard to advise. Have you been growing on this soil already? What has growth looked like? Is it a new tunnel?

If there is sand and stones among the clay, they make air channels between, so it sounds more dense than compact. It may work with compost on top but if you have time and energy, it may be worth removing some of the stones especially.
