I’ve harvested the remainder of my Leeks and noticed that a couple of them had what looked like bright Purple ink stains on the outside of the buried shank. It was only surface deep and didn’t affect the usability of the Leek at all. They made a great Leek Speltotto. Anyone know what this ‘Purple ink’ is.

I am not sure Darren, maybe they are purple with cold… in fact some of my leek flags are purple-tinged and that can be due to cold soil slowing the availability of nitrogen, temporarily locked up, you also see it occasionally in spring brassicas. Not like your ink stain!
There is a variety of leek – St Victor – available from the Organic Gardening Catalogue, which has beautiful purple-tinged leaves, and its a successful variety too!
