Finally bought myself a rain guage to see how we do over the summer and its nice to see an accurate measurement rather than looking a bucket or wheelbarrow!
But it leads me to wondering what is a decent amount of rain? Maybe the same as how long is a piece of string…
But would 10mm be enough each week? Given the average conditions at this time of year…warm sunny days but not super hot…Weekend before last we got 41mm on Dartmoor, then a week off and then we’ve had 8,2,4 and it raining again today, probably only a couple of mm though….
Perhaps its better just to judge by feeling the soil?

On an average summer day (want is that!) about 3mm moisture (rainfall equivalent) is lost via evaporation and transpiration. But more if windy and sunny, less if dull so yes, you can do your head in trying to work it our in variable weather.
Soil moisture is indeed a great thing to check, also bear in mind plants’ needs eg onions need v little now, celeriac a lot, salads little and more often. If not sure about watering, I would not.
