    Hello there,
I have taken on an allotment that is like a meadow. Has a big mound of rock hard soil in the middle too :) I want to no dig it and rotten wood chip too (Back to Eden garden style) but would like some ideas about how to deal with the meadow. Should I mow it and then put down cardboard, newspaper and compost? Should I dig it initially? Mow the grass, rotovate and get it level and then go no dig from there on? Thanks for any input. Matt

Quite a challenge here, having level soil is worthwhile but the dry conditions make it hard to move soil at the moment. I would certainly mow and then see more clearly the lie of the land.

Beyond that, it depends on what resources you can muster, how strong you are feeling, whether it rains to soften the soil, how level the ground is apart from the mound you mention, what perennial weeds may be growing and how quickly you want to be cropping.
