Very much enjoyed the Open Day today but I forgot to ask how you managed to have such success with your runner beans outside the poly tunnel when most of us had a very poor crop.
I also followed your advice re my weedful veggie patch and put 6″ of well rotted compost on it and covered it with black plastic over last winter. The patch is transformed this year with only minimal need for weed removal… marvellous!

I am happy you enjoyed the gardens and it is indeed lovely to see everything growing so well in this warmth.The beans were sown 10th May and planted 23rd, fleeced for only four days until I noticed lots of slug damage under the fleece so Itook it off. Then for a month the plants looked unhappy, were nibbled but survived. Somehow they came through all that, the miracle of undug soil, and now look great as you noticed. I just hope there is enough nice wether left for the beans to ripen, they are Czar for seed, butterbeans.
