I had never previously bothered with growing salad, beyond a few rows of cut and come again lettuce. This year, with more space in a new allotment, I followed Charles’s lettuce method, and am completely converted. Into about 6 inches of manure, I planted about 30 plants, of 3 types: Lollo Rosso, Parris Island (a cos) and All the Year Round (a butterhead). I’ve been picking a few leaves off each plant once or twice a week for the past 2 or 3 months. The All the Year Round have now died off, Lollos Rosso has just bolted and the Parris Island is still going strong. I’ve got some more ready to replace them; next year I’ll have them lined up a little sooner, ready to pick before the first sowing has tailed off. I’ve had salad for lunch several times a week. I’ve also just sown some winter lettuces – Rouge d’Hiver and Lattughino – it’ll be interesting to see how they cope over winter in the greenhouse.
Great to hear this Peter. So much about salad has to do with how you harvest. Other varieties you may enjoy are Navara (red, small oakleaf) and Maravilla di Verona, a long-lived batavian, from Seeds of Italy.
