Hello Charles.
How about sandy soil in comvination wit two months of sunny dry weather? The same aproach as to heavy clay, a bit more compost on top, say 15-20cm?
Anything else to help the retention of water?
Its so different, especially in dry weather. I think you just have to accept that moisture retention is poor and perhaps avoid growing crops like celeriac. On the other hand, plenty of organic matter certainly helps, I would use bulky & lower-nutrient composts such as leaf mould.
