Savoy – to leave or not

Hi there,

Been a while, things slowing down now, so finally remember to ask about my Savoy’s outside which have only starting to heart a month ago so won’t be cabbages for the winter I’m sure.
Wondering whether to have them for the greens or whether they will carry on and make ‘spring’ cabbages….I’m guessing I must have got them in too late, but August was cool. I transplanted on 13/7, which I thought would be ok. The Kale and PSB that went in the same week are looking respectable.

Hello Stew, it depends on the variety as different ones heart at different dates, so I guess you have a spring hearting one – check the seed packet’s small print. I would leave it in the ground as savoys are so hardy and in my experience they all heart in the end.

Hi Charles

The variety is Marner Grufewi, says it’s very hardy and late. But can harvest in the autumn! Typical seed packet info!
So from that I think they’ll do something worth waiting for. They will very likely make it through the winter and put on growth in Feb.

HI Charles,

Well the savoys are growing slowly, had a couple just for the pleasure, but wondering how long will i have to eat the rest of them – none of my winter cabbages have ever made it this far into spring so I realise I have no idea how long I have til they bolt!
Any idea?

Well done, welcome greens at a lean time.
Usually they go off a bit after making their heart quite dense and paler than the outer leaves. But in view of the cold weather they will be maturing more slowly and you can probably harvest them until around mid April, a nice prospect.

Yes wasn’t planned but a bonus – the kale and leaf beets are very thin now…..
