On my allotment site we are very lucky to have regular free deliveries of fresh seaweed from Paignton harbour.
Charles, would you suggest using this as a mulch or add it to the compost heap? I am never sure if the salt is harmful to the plants, and so far I have only used it to mulch the asparagus and a few fruit bushes. Also because it is raked out of the harbour it contains a lot of sand at times, as well as a few crabs and cockles.Sounds great Amanda, I’d be harvesting it by the truck load! Particularly good on asparagus and sea kale beds, but also a brill addition to the heaps too. Seem to remember Charles witnessing veg growing that was only fed by rotting seaweed and they were doing very well? A fantastic resource to tap in to…
Yes go for it. Salt is overstated as a ‘problem’, though if you mulch with seaweed in autumn, the salt will wash through. Some salt is good.
I saw it’s success on Iona in the Inner Hebrides, veg grown in sand.
Composting it is good too.
