Seaweed Meal.

I have three beds at my allotment which I will be mulching with black plastic this year to combat the last area of horsetail and bindweed that is still strong. I was considering sprinkling them with a combination of seaweed meal (a nice Christmas gift!), rockdust and then an inch or so of well rotted cow manure as a top layer. My idea to invest in the soil there for the following season.

Is this a good use of the seaweed meal or would a better use be to sprinkle it on beds I will be growing in this coming season? (I have enough to do a bit of both). I’m not sure how this product ‘works’.

Your seaweed would not be wasted under the plastic but I think you will have better value from it on your growing beds, where it will correct any imbalances of trace elements and make up any deficiencies, even in small amounts. It’s a wonderful soil food.

Thanks Charles. I’ll apply it my growing beds for this year and hope for even healthier growth. If we lived near the sea I have images of Sunday morning trips to the beach to harvest and then compost huge amounts of the stuff!
