seedlings rotting

While picking this morning I noticed 2 or 3 seedlings were rotting at ground level… (including some of my beautiful Rosemoor Batavian). Presumably there is nothing I can do to stop this? I wonder why it is happening? The soil is good and the plants are well spaced?? K

 This incredibly wet weather is not helping plants and it may be to do with that, possibly cutworm (large, white maggots) but as you say, I don’t think there is any remedy except tolerate a few losses. Do you mean seedlings (normally two to four leaves) or young plants?) I have noticed a massive increase in slug numbers over the last few days, lots of baby grey ones now, also more mildew than usual on older lettuce leaves. What joy! drought was better for growth at this time of year.

Thanks Charles. I mean young plants – I haven’t noticed more slugs or large maggots. This rain looks set in for rest of week. I think it may be mildew on young plants is that possible? K

 language problems (I thought you meant whole plants rotting)! yes mildew is now prevalent on lower leaves. Some mildew is normal and it does not rot whole plants, just older leaves. Some varieties are more susceptible especially red-leaved lettuce unfortunately. We just need some sun…
