Im just starting my journey with no dig. I have made 3 1.8 x 1 metre and 5 1 x 1 metre raised beds. I have so far filled 2 by taking a small layer of grass off like turfs then laid cardboard, a layer of well rotted farmyard manure then filled bed with multi purpose and municiple compost. My question is could i use the shavings, rabbit poop, straw etc as the bottom layer without technically composting it. Ie each week we get amount a barrow full could i tip that in ontop of the cardboard then add my compost? The top layer of compost would cover the rabbit hutch cleaning by around 4-5 inch depth. Would this be to fresh or just make a kinda warm/hot bed situation, ie to grow lettuce etc as it shallow rotted?
Hi Sarah, and I think this could work.
Lettuce is deeper rooting than perhaps one imagines, lots of fine roots plus the connections with fungal threads. In the first 2-3 months there are plenty of rooting possibilities in the new compost on top though.
