How would you go about breaking up a fairly compact soil pan. Last year I used green manure, Hungarian grazing rye which has had no impact. This year I am trying another green manure, red clover, which has deeper roots. Is there anything else I can do to break up the pan without digging it out.

Kiwioldgirl, probably alfalfa/lucerne but perhaps only in the second year when roots have had time to descend

sow long rooted radish in rows. When nearly mature hoe the tops off and sow rows in between and do the same.As the roots decay you will be left with soil that has been broken up.
