In Charles’s book Organic gardening, the No Dig Way … Charles gives spacing for Aquadulce broad beans as 45x10cm which I followed (as given beans and didn’t have packet plus love his book). I now see this spacing is much smaller than on most packets or in other books (which is more 45x 22-24cm or 8-9inches). Am I meant to leave them at 45x10cm, or I’m meant to thin them? It doesn’t say in the book to thin them… so thank you for pointing this beginner gardener along the way
Hello Claro, spacings are a bit tricky because they are only ever a guide. The ones I recommend have worked well for me over a long period and 45×10 gives plenty of bean stems. The only time I might thin is if they are autumn sown and every one survived the winter. Normally a few die and the others tiller with new stems to fill gaps. Wider spacing is a bit easier to pick pods.
As well as weather, it depends on soil fertility, how many stems grow from each seed. See what happens and adjust next year if necessary.
