Spring Garlic

Should i bother? I always seem to remember over wintering to produce much better bulbs. Thinking probably better than not growing any?

 Yes it will grow smaller bulbs, but still worth planting now, until about early March.

had a look at Marshall’s seeds and had forgotten how expensive Garlic is – any ideas why?

I agree Stew, and found the price of garden centre garlic quite pricey…….but then I am a Yorkshire man.

I think of them as a long-term investment tho, in that I shall be saving the biggest cloves for replanting each year. So, in theory, I hope not to have to make any outlay for anymore.

Late summer I also bought a huge bulb from a market stall whilst on holiday in Germany, as an experiment. The cloves are growing well and looking healthy – just as healthy as the cloves I bought from The Garlic Farm. Will have to wait ’til July to be sure of their quality, but they were very cheap in comparison!

I spent a lot of money this year on elephant garlic as we love it so much and I am pleased to say that the garlic farm have come up trumps in that all bulbs have come up and are growing strongly. For me that is a good reason to grow it, even in the depths of winter it manages to grow and give me hope for the next season.

My small scale growing experience is in conflict with my large scale experience, where we always would buy in alliums each year to eliminate any chance of white rot developing on site. Whereas you are saving the best cloves and developing you’re own stock, which is great, just i’ve been unsure about doing that.
Any views on white rot etc

 but I rarely see white rot, using home saved garlic for planting. Some friends got it with bought seed!

I think that no dig is good for containing it if it arrives, as opposed to digging/cultivating which spreads disease spores around.
