Staggered planting

Hi Charles,

I generally employ equidistant plant spacing in staggered rows. I’m wondering if there is any real advantage to staggered planting with crops such as Onions, Scallions and Garlic?

It’s a good question Don and I notice more even growth with staggered planting, and easier picking say of outer leaves from salads, since one can work all around each plant.
As you say though, for alliums there is not much difference, and I plant garlic in rows across beds, making it easier to hoe between.
On the other hand, I do not have many weeds!
Main thing is to keep asking these questions and notice the growth at say different spacings, to help find the answers that work best for you.

Thanks Charles. Weeding is not a major issue for me thanks to your no-dig method. I do have to weed of course but it has been considerably reduced since adopting no-dig. I was thinking of best use of available space for these crops.
I will continue with staggered planting for other crops.

PS I popped a question into the pea seed saving thread which I think you may have missed. Was wondering about saving seed from Peas that have been hit by Mildew at end of season.
