    HI,

Someone recently posted a query about varieties of sweetcorn that would provide a succession – I have not been able to find the post.

In April, I sowed Special Swiss Sweetcorn (from the Real Seed Catalogue) – apparently unusual as it is open-pollinated. This was ready for harvest throughout August.

An early June sowing of Mr Fothergills Sweet Corn Mirai M160Y F1 is being harvested now.

Both varieties produced a succession – from each sowing of 16 or 25 plants, I have harvested 4-6 cobs per week.

I would do that again. The Swiss Sweetcorn was a bit hit and miss in terms of yield and quality, but this may have been due to the very hot weather in which I did not water it. I did water the Mirai diligently and this paid off in better quality cobs.

    Cheers,
    Beverley

By growing different varieties you have crops maturing at different times, thats one achievement. The F1 variety, by definition, will tend to produce a uniform crop all at once, which could be seen as both a pro and a con. Having all the crop ripened before frost enables you to freeze in one go, while enjoying some fresh. Well done.
