Thinning spinach in modules to 1 plant per module?

Sowing spinach for the first time in modules, I took the insurance of sowing two seeds per module in one 15-module tray. Sod’s law says that I have got almost 100% germination, hence 30 seedlings!

Will it be best to thin these at some stage down to one per module, or will two plants happily grow together in a clump-like arrangement when transplanted into the soil down the line?

Hi Rhys,

I have grown both annual and perpetual Spinach. The latter’s seeds are like Beetroot, i.e. they are a cluster of seeds. You should thin them to one per module.
With annual Spinach I usually sow 4-5 seeds per cell and I plant out as a clump. I harvest individual leaves as required and cut the whole plant at about 2″ above ground level and the leaves regrow.
You need to make successional sowings to ensure a continuous supply of leaves.

Many ways to do it! For large spinach leaves I like one or two spinach per clump, all picked every 5-7 days from April. Definitely 2/clump if you want smaller leaves for salad.
