Tool Oil

Hi Charles,

I’m wondering if you could recommend a suitable Oil/Lubricant for use on Shears, Secateurs, etc.

I use Camellia Oil from Niwaki which is far more effective than any other oils / products that I have used in the past. It’s even better if you use it in conjunction with some fine wire wool: brush off any rust or sap residues and then oil them.

Hi Jack,

My concern here is that any residue of the oil left on the blades might do damage to the particular plant I,m pruning as it (the Niwaki Oil) contains paraffin?

call me a cheep skate but I use walnut oil from the kitchen on almost every thing. from furniture and gun stocks through tool handles and blades 🙂 As they say noting added and noting taken away.

Just spent a few hours looking into this again.
It seems to me that boiled Linseed Oil is the product to use.
Anyone any opinions on this?

Don it used to work well on my hockey sticks but I do believe that almost any natural oil will do the trick

Hi Bluebell,

I’m growing organic which is why I’m being so picky about what product to use.
Boiled Linseed Oil has an additive added to stop it congealing in the bottle which, apparently, then biodegrades as it dries.
But I’m getting lots of contradictory info on the web about Linseed Oil some of which suggests it promotes mildew!
I’m hoping Charles can advise something suitable.

I have some veg oil for the chainsaw blade and it works well for other tools, even I put a bit on my rusty handsaw blade.
