3 years ago I planted a couple of pips in a pot from a luscious apple of unknown origin, just to see what happened and got two mini apple trees, which I planted in our fruit cage 18 months ago. Now, I have my chosen tree at 8ft high and the other one I will sacrifice as it seems to be less healthy.
What I’d like to do is to train the main stem horizonally, either as one or two leaders in a stepover/espalier form.
Never having done this before, I was wondering if there are any simple guidelines for doing this, or is it simply a matter of inserting a few vertical posts at the desired height, attaching a wire across the top and clipping the main leader to it?
Pointers to any books for amateur fruit tree novices also appreciated!
