I am having trouble germinating my coriander seed.
I sowed some on 22/3/12 (Leaf Moon day)in seed trays and about four have grown…
I am trying different methods – modules, trays, larger containers – some in kitchen some in greenhouse…
Can anyone help?
I was so sad to hear that Maria Thun had died – I wonder whose moon calendar poeple will use now? KI reckon it must be either; old seed, too dry, too wet, too hot or too cold. I have only ever sown coriander outdoors in the garden and it germinates readily. Additionally it self seeds prolifically if left to set seed. I have it all over the place at the moment like mustard and cress, so it must have germinated over the preceeding months, which makes me wonder if the compost temp can be too high?
You could try crushing the seed cases a little on a hard surface – I find it helps and smells good too.
All the best.Good point beansy; I wonder if the frost helps to break open the seed case, as in my outdoor self seeded plants?

Sometimes I think it can be just a bad batch of seeds. Of the 8 packets of lettuce seed that I purchased fresh this year, seeds from 3 of them have germinated very poorly or not at all. Same compost, tray, location, watering, temperature etc. Unless different lettuce prefer different conditions? Maybe I’ll give them another go as an experiment.

Hi Kate, I think Pete and Darren are probably right and you got some bad seed. I sow coriander later in the year and use about 10 seeds in a larger 4cm module to plant as a clump at 20cm. I use a variety called Santos which is slow bolting but have also used catering grade seed which grew ok but flowered quicker. Used to soak the seed overnight but don’t bother anymore as i found it didn’t really make any difference.
Yup crushing the seeds definitely helps. Coriander is slow 2. Wet them well.
